When is it Too Late to Fire your Attorney?

As a client, you can fire your attorney at any time during your family law case. Though some special circumstances may require the court's approval, generally, changing attorneys isn't a big deal. But before you do so, it is wise to examine the consequences of doing so.

Changing your legal representation can be due to many reasons. Whether they lack professionalism and transparency or you simply don't trust their abilities, you are within your rights to fire your lawyer if you're unhappy with any aspect of their service.

But when is it too late to fire your attorney? Let's discuss.

Firing your Attorney Too Late may be Expensive & Detrimental to your Interests

Firing your attorney is an important decision that shouldn't be taken lightly. Understand the reason behind such a move, and whether a new attorney can make a significant difference to your case. More importantly, how will changing attorneys affect your case?

Firing your attorney too late or during a critical time of the process can be against your interests. A new attorney will take time to understand your case, review evidence, and create a strategy. All this may take time and hamper the progress of your case.

Your previous attorney may also have the right to claim his/her fee for all work done in your case. All this prolongs your case and also adds to the expenses.

Lastly, if your previous attorney successfully negotiated an agreement waiting to be signed, firing them and hiring a new lawyer may cause a breakdown in the settlement process, which will then start from scratch once again.

If you are unhappy with your attorney, schedule a free consultation with Jos Family Law to know your options. We will advise you on the consequences of changing attorneys and how it will impact your situation. If you decide to hire us, we will represent you with compassion and care.
